The Masters

Wow. What a back-nine on Sunday that was at Augusta National. Three hole-in-ones, almost two with one shot. Some unexpected nervousness from Spieth after being five clear with nine holes to play, but above all a fantastic win for Danny Willett. The Ryder Cup looks in safe hands so far. Congratulations to Heather Ensor, Brian Edwards and Roy Christian who had Willett, Westwood and Spieth in the Sweepstake.

Danny Willett will remember his chip shot on the 17th for a very long time. For me, this was the shot that won it for him, having missed the green he had to get this chip close. There were two things to note here:

  1. How he kept the ball close to the ground as to maximise control and limit the variables
  2. The confidence he had in his wedge

A lot of golfers I come across haven't been educated as to the right wedge for their game. There's a lot more to it than just the loft.

Feel free to come in for a chat, we can then send you out on to the chipping area with one of our demo wedges to put the theory to the test.

The Swing Room is proving a real success at Heswall. For the first time, because of the simulator, people can actually see the benefit of their lessons and custom fitting in real numbers.

Lesson Case Study - Mike Brown

Mike and I started work about three months ago in preparation for this season. When we started, his 7-iron was getting mixed results. The dispersion was ok but his distance was a problem due to his left-to-right shape, carry 109 yards on average. After some work on changing the plane of his swing, we have increased that carry to 125-130 yards and actually bettered the dispersion. His hard work has paid off and his goal of a five-shot handicap reduction this year is very realistic.

Custom Fitting Case Study - Steve Baxter

Steve is a very good golfer. He had been using a PING Rapture 10 degree stiff driver for about four years now. It was evident on the simulator that his shots weren't going anything like high enough, launching around eight degrees. Now his new Titleist 915 driver with a regular shaft and 12.5 degrees of loft launches at around 14 degrees, whilst still only spinning at 2700rpm, giving him a massive carry gain of 35 yards.

That's the difference between hitting a 7-iron into a green or a wedge

We can improve your yardage gain or accuracy within 30 minutes with the right head/shaft combination without you having to change your swing. If you wish to book in for a custom fit or lesson, please get in touch here.

Competition news

We played 18 holes in the Midweek Stableford on Thursday. It will be back to 12 holes for around a month until the Trotter competition starts. The winner with 38 points was John Body, runner-up was Carl Adams with 36 and in third was Iain Colligan, one shot further back.

On Saturday we had the Nike Experience Stableford, and the prizes on offer were fantastic. A pair of LC4 shoes and a dozen balls for the winners, a quarter-zip therma top for the runners-up and a dozen balls for third place. We also had a dozen balls for the best junior on the day. Division One's winner was Phil High with 41 points, three ahead of Neil Stephenson in second. Third place went to Keith Morrison with 37 points. Ben Kelly won Division Two with 40 points, one ahead of Dave Harland in second. Chris Starkie finished in third with 38 points. The best junior on the day was Tom Kitchen who carded 37 points. All prizes will be presented at the next prizegiving.

The ladies played the Pro's Benefit Stableford on Tuesday. Division One was battle of the Barbaras, with Barbara Jamieson coming out on top with 35 points ahead of Barbara Eyers in second. Division Two was won with a level-par 36 by Alka Tank. Runner-up with 34 points was Jaqui Hynes, with Christine Hancock also scoring 34 in third. Brenda Dooney took top spot in Division Three with 30 points, one back was Helen Billington, and in third with 27 was Jackie Walker. Division Four saw Katie Cleary taking advantage of half-term with a winning score of 31, runner-up was Rose Dhenin who had the best of a whole host of 25s, one of whom was Anne Chadwick in third. Thanks to Jackie Walker and Joyce Richmond for sending the cards out from the spike bar.
