The work that Guy and his team have been doing on the course is really starting to pay dividends. There's lovely definition on the fairways and consistency on the greens. So much so that we have had rave reviews of late, non more so than off a group of Wasps Rugby legends who all made a point of coming in after their round to praise the course and the club. I hear compliments on a daily basis from the members which is very nice to hear.
The Captain and I managed to start the 2016 Challenge matches with a 3&2 win over Mark Sanderson and Pete Higgins on Tuesday afternoon. Our matches come thick and fast from now on and I will post the results on the men's board.
Huge congratulations to Heswall's Tom Dolan for winning the County Matchplay Championship at Caldy on Friday. Tom qualified through the strokeplay event. He had a convincing 6&5 win in his semi-final and another in the final, running out a 6&4 winner. This really is a top class achievement.
All eyes were on Rory last week as he competed in the Irish Open. Having made an immaculate birdie on the par-5 16th over water, Rory went into the last hole with a one shot lead. After nailing his tee shot straight down the fairway, McIlroy faced a 256-yard second shot on the par-5 72nd hole. Nothing fazed him as he hit it to a couple of feet and rolled in the eagle putt to seal the victory. Pure class. Watch the video below to see the shot I'm talking about.
On the other side of the pond, the Byron Nelson Championship took place in Texas. What an exciting Sunday. Those eagle-eyed viewers may have seen Sergio chip-in on number 8 using his hybrid club. Something I am a big fan of as many of you know. Big hitting Nike Athlete Brooks Koepka had the tournament in the palm of his hand, but in the end his double-bogey six on the first playoff hole gifted the trophy to Sergio. Is this his year for a major?
Trotter 3 was played in varied conditions. Teeing off in the rain was Ally Macdonald, whose five birdies in a row around the turn helped him to a personal best 67, nett 62 - the lowest score of the year at the club. Brian Edwards must have thought his 67 had a chance of winning, but on this occasion is was only good enough for second place. It was still a fabulous score nevertheless. In third place was Jay Tank with a nett 68. Ally can be seen in the adjacent photo.
Saturday saw another mixed day from the skies for the Spring Meeting and Yellow-Tee Stableford. In the Spring Meeting, Division One was decided on a back nine countback. After shooting 71, Ian Young came out on top against Derek Eason. In third, again on countback with 72, was Ben Dixon from Graham Small. Division Two was no different, with a three-way tie at the top meaning countback was needed once again. This time Trevor Starkey Jones came out on top, Peter Walsh was second and Dave Stonley third. All of the prize winners were the subject of handicap reductions as the CSS was 75. In the Yellow-Tee Stableford, Frank Lovell took top spot with 36 points, runner-up was Graham Williams with 36, in third place was Alan Williamson with 35. Great scoring against a CSS of 34 points.
The ladies had glorious conditions on Tuesday for their Centenary Stableford competition. In Division One, Heather Ensor did it again with a winning score of 33, two ahead of runner-up Sue Totty. Third place went to Sue Banks with 30 points. Chris Lloyd stormed to victory in Division Two with a fantastic 39 points, four back in second was Sue Pogson and in third was Christina Hornsby with 34 points. Division Three was a bit tighter, Sheila Kenwright pipping Helen Billington to the post after scores of 35 and 34, respectively. The winner of the trophy and Division Four was Lady Captain Alice with 40 points (and a handicap reduction of three). Second place went to Gill Cooper with 35 points, two ahead of third-placed Anne Chadwick.
The 3rd Seniors vs Juniors match took place on Sunday. At the beginning, the weather was not so good but luckily, after a few holes, the sun came out and it was a glorious afternoon. A 4BBB format, the Men's and Lady Captains led off vs the Junior Captain and Kate Cleary, followed by five more matches.
A great event, thoroughly enjoyed by juniors and seniors alike, with the Juniors triumphant. We won't mention the 5.5-0.5 score. Both teams can be seen in the adjacent photo.
