Tour news

Last week was the European Tour's flagship event, the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth. It's one where we are always routing for a British winner and come Sunday morning, Lee Westwood was looking good for the title but fell away in the end. Out of the pack emerged Chris Wood to secure a one shot win.

In his third start since the devastation of the Masters, Jordan Spieth put aside his final-round collapse to win the Dean & Dulca Invitational. Spieth came in with six birdies on his back nine to comfortably win his home tournament by three shots. There were certainly fireworks to finish as Jordan holed a 20-foot breaker on 16 for birdie, chipped in for birdie at the 17th and blew his opponents away when he holed a 35-foot birdie putt at the last. Three birdies in the final three holes.

Competition results

In last week's Trotter competition, Jay Tank was the subject of a heavy handicap reduction after his winning nett 69 saw off Mike Robinson, Joe Williamson and Paul Chadwick on countback. Paul was the unlucky one who ended up 4th.

The Alf Lambert Salver was played off the white tees on Saturday and was a well-contested affair. Another 69 won the day, this time Lance Flor scooped the main prize ahead of Jack Grey in second and James Smethurst in third, both with 71s. Division Two saw Daniel Kitchen card a nett 73 to win the junior prize, and in the main event Peter Walsh was the winner with a 74. Tony Walker also had a 74 but lost on countback, Brendon Bilton finishing third on nett 75.

Hayat Leung won Sunday's Junior Stableford with a superb 41 points. Josh Samaroo was second with 37, John Kitchen came in third with 36. In the 12-hole event, Daniel Edwards triumphed in his first competition over Joe Spencer and Max Donally.

This week's Bank Holiday competition was a mixed team event. The winners, on countback with 81 points, were Marilyn Jones, Sue Totty, Richard Alexander and Bob Carter. The unlucky runners-up were Tony & Jackie Walker and Alan & Bernie Jones.

The ladies played their Charity Medal on Tuesday. Lucy Jamieson took advantage of the school half-term to card an excellent two-under 72 to win Division One. Bette St. John was runner-up with 75 and Barbara Jamieson third with 78. In Division Two, Christina Hornsby kept her momentum going to top the group with a 77, one shot back was Maureen Blackham and Wendy Smith came third with 82. Division Three was won with a steady 75 from Theresa O'Neill, Jackie Walker was two back and Helen Billington three. Sylvia Comer was Division Four's winner with an 81. Anne Fisher pipped Anne Chadwick into second after they both carded an 84.

Club news

The Gayton Estates Medal takes place in two weeks and there will be an opportunity for the gents to enter ISM's 'Race to Atlantis' competition. For a £5 entry, the winning nett score will qualify to play at The Belfry in the national final, where two out of 40 winners will then jet off business class to Dubai to play in the Wednesday Pro-Am of the DP World Championship. I was there last year for this event and it's one heck of a week. All of the qualifiers will be all-expenses paid from the moment they pay their initial £5 entry. Good luck.

There was another big win for the Heswall Men's Team away at defending champs Caldy. Tom Dolan and Elliot Smith won 4&3 against Ray Hughes and Dave Bathgate, James Hornsby and Dave Cederholm squandered a 2 up lead to lose 2 down, and Ethan Smith and Adam Moore won 3&2.
