Wales have topped the group after a convincing 3-0 win over Russia on Monday night. England have qualified through to the knockout stages despite an unconvincing 0-0 draw with Slovakia, finishing in second place. Roy needs to get his tactics spot on in the next round if we are to progress any further.
The U.S. Open was an intriguing watch. Rough that had to be cut back, glass like greens and no one knowing who the leader was on the back nine come Sunday - watch our video at the bottom of the newsletter to view the controversy. There was a strong European presence yet again, with Westwood, Garcia and Lowry all coming up just short. Finally shaking off the tag of 'best player not to win a Major' was Dustin Johnson with a clean birdie at the last. What an event. Roll on Royal Troon.
Speaking of Troon, there were a number of us trying to qualify for The Open on Monday. Heswall was represented on a tough day at West Lancs by Tom Dolan 73, Myself 75, Sandeep Grewal 79, Rob Hearty 79 and Iain Roberston 82. Chris Sands played up at Fairhaven and after a 73 is currently a reserve for a spot at final qualifying.

In last Thursday's Trotter, Junior Captain Tom Kitchen yet again showed his fondness of the yellow course with a level-par 72 for a 67 nett. There were a host of 69s to follow, with Chris Moores beating Hywel Jones into second place on countback.
I was greeted with relieved faces on Saturday morning as the gents checked in for a timely Stableford. Still a handicap qualifier and still a well-contested event. In Division One, Dave Cederholm topped the list with 38 points from fellow scratch team player James Hornsby. Third with 37 was Paul Chadwick who put his success down to the SIX practice balls he hit beforehand. Division Two was the battle of the 35s, as Mike Scullion came out on top after beating Peter Walsh and Mark Gibson on countback. The junior prize was the battle of the Kitchens as John's 38 pipped brother Daniel's 37 by one.
The ladies enjoyed an Exchange Day with Curzon Park on Tuesday so we have no scores to report.
