Hello golfers,
So we're going to core out and improve a good number of greens over the Autumn/Winter this year. Those of you who attended Tuesday's EGM would have been ears to Trevor Moon and Brian Palmer's excellent presentations. Now that the movement has gone forward, Guy and his team have already started to prepare some top quality temporary playing surfaces so that we can still enjoy competitive golf during the transition. This is a necessary and very positive move forward. Exciting times ahead.
The Scratch team halved their away match at Prenton on Tuesday night. Tom Dolan and Dave Cederholm lost 2&1, Carl Adams and Jon Little won 2&1 (despite a hole-in-one from Lloyd Hart (Prenton) on 16) and Ethan and Jo Williamson (on his team debut) halved. The team need two wins from their last two games, which are at home, and need Wallasey to drop points in their last matches, both away, if we are to stand any chance of winning the league.
Last week's Trotter event was mainly played through some June drizzle. Joesph Williamson made the most of it, returning a 71 (nett 68) to beat James Hornsby by two. In third place with a 71 was Alan Jones.
There were a number of players in contention for the 36-hole aggregate Ball Cup going into Saturday's second leg. One of those being the red-hot Tom Dolan, whose total of 146 playing off +3 was mighty impressive. However it was Phil High who will see his name on the honours board after scores of 70 and 74 for a 144 total. Well done Phil, great golf off the blue tees. Here are the second round results: Peter Cucchi topped Division One with a nett 71, two ahead of runner-up Lee Pennington, Tom Dolan third with 74. John Paul Stanhope had a welcome return to form to win Division Two with an excellent 69, Peter Walsh carded a 71 for second with Andy Green three back in third.
In the alternative Yellow-Tee Stableford, countback was needed to separate the 38 pointers. John Sharman and Neil Sleeman went head-to-head, but it was John who ran out the winner. Trevor Cornford was third with 36. The CSS was 35 points.
Our new assistant, Jason, was behind the counter on Sunday serving the cards for the Matrimonal Cup, thanks to all for introducing yourselves. Here's how the event panned out: Alan & Bernie Jones managed to edge last year's winners, Jay & Alka Tank, to secure first place. Rosemary & Martin Greaney were delighted with their 3rd place podium finish. Alan said that the six consecutive single putts on holes 12 to 17 helped boost their score, with Bernie rolling in some monster putts, both uphill and downhill, but he conceded that the shot of the tournament must have been playing partner Bill Syvret's bunker shot on 15.
The ladies played a Team Yellowball on Tuesday, a fun format that proved a popular event. The winning team with a fabulous 93 points were Helen Billington, Barbara Garrett, Ruth Walker and Christina Hornsby. The runners up with 88 were Barbara Jamieson, Theresa O'Neill, Annemaria Kitchen and Stephanie Way. The team in third with 83 were Brenda Dooney, Jaquai Hynes and Wendy Smith who had 'Ghost B' as their 4th player.
Three Heswall members came out for an 18-hole playing lesson last week. This is the best type of lesson for the majority of golfers as it highlights your strengths and weaknesses and after all, the golf course is the only place where we need to get better. If you'd like to take to the course with me, please get in touch here.
At the end of the month, Jason will be running some Junior Camps under the banner of 'Heswall Hornets'. Although these are Heswall GC run sessions, they're open to non-members too. There will be a six-week course running Saturday mornings from 23rd July and a Tuesday to Friday camp between 26th and the 29th July. Please register your interest in the shop.
Thongchai Jaidee showed the youngsters how to do it in the French Open, proving that it's not all about distance off the tee. On the other hand, it was big hitting Dustin Johnson who did it again over at Firestone, fresh from his U.S. Open triumph.
Is it the 'Big Three' or the 'Big Four'?
Just when you thought Jason Day, Jordan Spieth and Rory McIlroy were all set to divvy up golf's biggest prizes, along comes big-hitting Dustin Johnson. The US champion is now number two in the world and looks to be finally fulfilling his potential after another fine win at the weekend - and a big one too at the WGC Bridgestone Invitational. For years Johnson seemed destined to be the bridesmaid, now he's one of the favourites to go back-to-back in Majors and take the Claret Jug back across the Atlantic.
Next week's Open at Royal Troon could be a classic
