So, that's the last major of the year done and dusted; another great event. It's incredible how the cream always rises to the top with Jason Day pushing all the way and Branden Grace also going close. However, with a cool two-putt par on 18, it was Jimmy Walker who made it a clean sweep of maiden Major winners this season. The closest British contenders were Paul Casey and Tyrrell Hatton both with a top 10 finish.
Tom Dolan continues to fly the flag for Heswall in amateur events across the county. He was the second best qualifier in the recent English Amateur before losing out in the first round of the matchplay. Last week, however, he carded 14 birdies in 36 holes to win at Stockport. This win fires him back to the top of the Galvin Green Order of Merit. Well done, Tom!
Thursday saw some glorious sunshine and some tropical rain, the Captain and I were on the 5th when the latter arrived. We probably played as well as we have done all year but found Keith Greenfield in sparking form. Backed up when needed by Pat Rodgers and his trusty putter, we eventually fell at the 17th, 3&1 the margin.
Making the most of the fantastic conditions after 5pm that day was Dave Cederholm. He's been threatening a low one and it certainly came as his 69 (nett 65) blazed Trotter 13. Runner-up with another great gross of 73 was Mark Dewhurst for a 67. Third with 68 was Mike Robinson.
There was a change of format for the second Invitation of the year with a shotgun at 8:15am and again at 1:15pm. Conditions were perfect all day but the course stood up to the new generous 90% handicap rule. Continuing his good form from Thursday, Keith Greenfield alongside his brother Iain from Ilkley GC scooped first prize with 43 points. The runners up with the best of the three 41 pointers were Peter Vine and his guest Andrew Scott.
The club's Mixed Foursomes Medal was contested on Sunday. The winners with 73.0 were Paul and Anne Chadwick; runners up just 0.5 behind after a gross 76 were Paul and Barbara Jamieson. Dave and Barbara Garratt finished in third.
On Tuesday it was Ladies Stableford time. Once again, taking advantage of her time off was Anna Webster who triumphed in Division One with a very impressive 40 points. Only one back was Sue Banks in second, third with 36 was Judith M Brown. Ruth Walker topped Division Two with 38 points, second with 35 was Marilyn Jones and third with 32 was Sue Pogson. In Division Three, Ala Lloyd secured top prize with 36, a countback was needed to separate Chris Hancock and Jackie Walker in second and third after scores of 33. In Division Four it was 35 points for winner Thea Cornford, 33 for Sylvia Comer in second and the same for Ann Scriven in third.
