Success story

Just what was needed

We can't think of a more deserving winner than Justin Rose, golf's first Olympic champion since 1904 - a huge congratulations to him on winning gold after a thrilling final-round duel with Henrik Stenson. Make no mistake, golf needed this positive outcome after several high-profile golfers decided not to compete in Rio.

"That felt better than anything I've ever won. It was the best tournament I've ever done"

This was a quote from Rose's post round interview - a former US Open champion let's not forget.

"Hopefully we've shown Brazil what golf is about. I'm glad it was close. Not for my nerves. For golf."

Rose relished the opportunity to represent Great Britain, arriving in Brazil a week before the Olympics officially started to ensure he was part of the opening ceremony. Anyone who follows the Englishman on Twitter will know what competing in the Olympics meant and how genuine he is about helping to grow the game. With a global audience of approximately 4 billion, it's fair to say Rose, Stenson and the rest of the Olympic field put on a fantastic show, doing a superb job of showcasing everything that's good about the game. Jordan Spieth has already tweeted his ambition to represent USA in Tokyo in four years', which tells us a lot. Roll on 2020!

If last week's golf has inspired you to get back out on the practice ground, get in touch here to book a lesson so we can help you on your way.

Shop news

Most of us practice how far we hit our clubs, not all of us however know exactly how far we have to the flag once we are out on the course. The new SkyCaddie SW2 watch is best on test for giving you this information. Strapped to your wrist for convenience and more accurate than any other device you could have, this vital information for only £129.99. Here's the best bit: it has over 30,000 pre-loaded courses stored on it meaning you don't need to worry about downloading your next venue, just turn up and it will know where you are. If you're serious about your golf then you must try one of these.

Our Nike stock has depleted since announcing the 40% OFF sale, however there are still lots of pieces left. If you were thinking of ditching your long irons in place of a hybrid then come and try one of these while they are going so cheap. As you know, I've been using them for two years and they're fantastic golf clubs.

Which brand would you like to see in the shop?

With Nike no longer making golf clubs there will be an empty section in the shop. I've been thinking about which manufacturer to replace them with to go alongside Titleist but it's not an easy choice. Please let me know what you would like to see in the shop for 2017 - get in touch here.

Competition news

In Last Thursday's Trotter, the juniors and colts were kept at bay. Winning the event with a superb 67 was Howard Williams, two clear of Peter Higgins in second with Chris Hornsby's 70 securing third.

The first Junior Open at the club for some time was a huge success with strong showings from the home contingent. Winner on the day was Alexandra Sadler (Tidworth Garrison) with a nett 67, beating John Kitchen (Heswall) and Olly Davies Wilson (Heswall) on countback.

In the QE2 Salver on Saturday, Nick Orr was back to winning ways in Division One after his 71 bettered Sam Austin's on countback, third was Jack Grey with 72. It was Jeff Bowes who topped Division Two, also with a 71, Tony Hogan was runner-up with 72 and West Lancs winner Bob Blick was third with 73. Adam Carter scooped the junior prize after an excellent 69 and Elliot Smith's 72 was the lowest gross.

It was the Junior Summer Meeting on Sunday, Josh Samaroo continued his great form to win with a 68, second with 70 was John Kitchen, third was Olly Davies Wilson with a 71. In the subsidiary stableford it was a maiden win for William Betteridge as he carded 34 points, three in front of Sam Donally in second.

The Ladies Medal was played in fine weather on Tuesday. In Division One, Barbara Garratt was at it again as her 75 pipped Sue Banks on countback, third was Lucy Jamieson with a gross 78 for a 76 nett. Christina Hornsby was Division Two's winner with a 76, runner-up was Steff Way with a 79, third with 80 was Alka Tank. The same score of 76 won it for Christine Hancock in Division Three, on clear of runner-up Helen Billington, Sandra Cohen finished in third. In Division Four it was Trisha Lees turn to top the tree with a 75, runner up with 78 was Anne Chadwick, third with 79 was Thea Cornford.

Club teams

We've been keeping tabs on the men's scratch team throughout the season. They needed a win at home vs Caldy on Tuesday to win the league, and they got it. Jon Little and Dave Cederholm won 4&2, Charlie Berry and Elliot Smith lost 4&3, Adam Moore and Ethan Smith won 4&2 for a 2-1 victory. Having tied with Wallasey on both points and head-to-head results, Heswall finished with a better "goal difference" of +7 to Wallasey's +5. Well done to everyone who represented the team and especially to captain Dave Cederholm.
