We have taken delivery of more Autumn/Winter clothing, layering up is the best thing to do to avoid the cold as you compete in the Winter months. We now have an exciting new range of HGC crested accessories from umbrellas to headcovers.
Another event on the European Tour was won by the home favourite as Francesco Molinari clinched the Italian Open with the final putt on the 72nd green, holding off a resurgent Danny Willett. There was a break in the FedEx Playoff series before this week's season-ending Tour Championship, however Andrew 'Beef ' Johnston secured his playing rights in the US for 2017 after a 4th place finish in the Boise Open.
Good luck to county champion Tom Dolan this week as he tees up at Collingtree Park, Northampton, in the first stage of European Tour Qualifying School. Tom is looking to earn his tour card through this qualifying series, he started with a solid opening round of level-par 72. Sandeep Grewal will also be hoping to qualify as he flies to France next week.
We had glorious conditions for Sunday's Finals Day. Christina Hornsby started the ball rolling with a Friday night victory over Maureen Blackham in the Dora Bennett final. She then triumphed on Sunday in the Captain's Prize for ladies over Barbara Garratt. Next to complete their match was Maureen Blackham & Terry Hurst who triumphed in the Mixed Foursomes final over Tony & Jackie Walker.
Ryan Garland & Jack Grey were 5&3 winners over Lee Pennington & Ben Kelly in the Summer Fourball final. The semi-finals of the Captain's Prize teed off at 8am. Steve Quail got the better of Dave Stonley and Mark Sanderson overturned a three-hole deficit to beat James Hornsby on the 18th. I was the referee for the afternoon final. Steve was playing nicely but Mark Sanderson was a cool customer, nerveless throughout, seldom dropping a shot. After making a birdie-4 on the 9th to make the turn 6 up, Steve clawed one back on 12 but it proved just a bridge too far in the end as Mark ran out a 7&5 victor. Well done to all finalists.
There was a Midweek Stableford for both ladies and gents on Thursday last week. Dave Harland was the runaway winner in the men's comp with 43 points, five clear of Joe Williamson in second and Trevor Starkey Jones in third. Helen Billington recorded 37 to finish ahead of Christina Hornsby and Jan Lyon in the ladies equivalent.
The men contested a Wave competition on Saturday. Scoring wasn't as high as previous years but you can only beat what's in front of you. With a 78, the winning team were John Farrell, Jamie Powell & Mark Dunbar. Runners up were Mark Dewhurst, Steve Skupski & Neil Stephenson. Third were Phil Jones, Dave Banks & Les Wollen.
In the Captain's Medal we had a three-way tie at the top with scores of 71. Coming out victorious was Ray Lawless whose winner's speech has been dormant in his bag so long it had faded. Runner-up on the day was Chris Hornsby with Sam Austin in third.
Congratulations also to Scratch Team captain Dave Cederholm and the lads for winning the Wirral Scratch League against runners up Caldy, at Caldy, on the final green.
With the Wirral Classic back on the peninsula, our ladies played their weekly competition on Wednesday. The stableford results will be in next week's news. The feedback from the visitors on Tuesday was tremendous, Guy and the team had the greens at 11.5 on the stimp.
