Tour news

Local eyes were on former member Paul Waring down in Joberg this week. In a rain affected 54 hole tournament the Cheshire man had a share of the lead teeing off on Sunday. A valiant final round of 3 under was just one short of South African Darren Fichart, so close for Paul but on the plus side he bagged himself a spot at this year's Open at Royal Birkdale.

The PGA national in Florida was the setting for last week's PGA tour Sony Open. A number of European Tour members teed it up as they start to acclimatise for upcoming WGC events leading up to the Masters, the best of those was Englishman Tyrell Hatton who finished in a tie for 4th. It was the popular figure of Rickie Fowler who lifted his 4th PGA tour title with a 12 under par total.

Club news

Last week was the first time that I can remember whereby the course was open but nobody entered the midweek competition. The reason? Hurricane Doris, conditions were horrendous, 90mph winds and driving rain swept across the course. At midday a tee shot off the first could well have ended up in Chester. Contrary to belief the fourball of John Smith, Colin Jones, Keith Housley and John Heath went out for 7 holes at about 3pm, Keith managing to play 2 under his handicap! Being the only 4 players on the course this is newsletter worthy.

Saturday was the final stableford round of the Blair Salver competition with players jostling to make the top 8. Shaun Carter was the winner on the day with 39, Richard Larkins in the Chris Kenrick was second overall with Steve Skupski third. Richards 39 puts him top of the Chris Kenrick aggregate table.

The weather was kind to us on Sunday for the first drive-in of the week. 2017 Captain Trevor cycled on to the 1st Tee in his bowler hat, cut a fresh hole in the putting green, was serenaded by the choir and their version of blue moon before making a great swing with the extra-long driver only to see his shot go up in a cloud of dust.

Well done to the team of Bob Mottershead, Roy Christian, Jim Rymer & Brian Edwards who were the competition winners with 88 points. Runners up with 87 were Steve Skupski, Mark Bentley, Magdy Taher & Mark Dewhurst. Third with 83 were Dave Cederholm, Mike Mcqueen, Shay Keogh & Mark Sanderson.

Tuesday was the turn of 2017 Ladies Captain Heather who was taken back to her days as Head of Gayton Primary with the ladies section as her 'students'. There was some great fun upstairs with some flying poo and a poor ofsted report, the lady captain showed off her excellent putting and driving skills.... with tiny clubs. Unfortunately the shotgun competition didn't happen as the course was covered in snow.

Shop news

This week we had another drop of Nike shoes. This year's selection is brilliant, with the majority of them costing less than £90. Come and try some on. The most popular out on tour so far is the Lunar Command 2, I have been wearing them for a few weeks and Tommy Fleetwood was at the club in his last week. They are ridiculously comfortable.

We are pleased to announce that we have taken delivery of the brand new Sigma G Putter range from PING and the original putter manufacturer certainly haven't lost their touch. These 2017 models are fantastic. Feel free to take one out onto the practice green to try for yourself
