The WGC Dell Match Play in Austin, Texas, was a great event to watch. We don't often get to see the best players playing match play. There were some big upsets and some big scores. The final was fantastic though as the big hitting Spaniard John Rahm took on the even bigger hitting world number one Dustin Johnson. Johnson raced into a 4 up lead through 8 holes but Rahm to stepped up a gear getting it back to dormie one. A par was, in the end, good enough for Johnson to claim back to back WGC victories, cementing his place at the top of the world rankings.
We have had a great week of sunshine bringing more people to the course, which is great to see. The Midweek Stableford on Thursday was the start of it. Barbara Jamieson was the ladies winner with 25, Ann Scriven pipped Trudi Harris into second on countback after scores of 22.
Saturday was the last of the Winter Informal competitions meaning the winner of the Chris Kenrick was to be crowned. Taking top spot on the day was Andy Green with 43 points, 5 clear of Chris Dhenin in second and John Reid in third who also had 38. After totting up the best 5 accumulated scores the Kenrick winner was.
In the sweep Dave Cederholm returned 40 points to take second overall, ahead of Adam Moore and Peter Vine.
Well done to Simon Banks who has been the most consistent performer over the series of winter stablefords, earning him the Tony Brooker trophy.
The ladies played a team event on Tuesday, there was another change in the weather as the bobble hats reappeared. The team of Ann Scriven, Christine Hancock, Sylvia Comer & Margaret Nicholas didn't let the wind affect them as they gelled nicely for a winning score of 95. Runners up with 92 were Clare Palmer, Sue Banks, Sue Totty & Marilyn Jones. Third on 91 were Sheila Kenwright, Eileen Kilgannon, Wendy Smith & Sue Lovell. Helen Billington and Sheila Kenwright shared the 2s pot, each getting one on the 7th.
