Great week for Lee Slattery

The D&D Czech Masters made for almost the perfect week for Lee Slattery. He played the four rounds knowing that his wife Faye could go into labour at any time. On the 18th tee of round 4 he also had a chance of winning! A superb runner up finish has secured his tour card for next season. The man who pipped him to the title was South African hotshot, Hayden Porteuos.

Justin Thomas comes out on top

There was a Monday finish in the Dell Technologies Championship over in the US as it was a long weekend over in the States. Masters Champ Sergio Garcia didn't have a good Sunday, bending his putter after a poor putt, meaning he had to putt with his 3 wood, driver and 3 iron for the rest of the way round; while a shank on the final hole was the cherry on top. USPGA Champ Justin Thomas was in the lead going into the last round but he could hear the sound of The Open champ Spieth coming up fast behind him. Thomas held his nerve and a final round of 5 under was good for a one shot win over his great friend.

Senior competitions round-up

Congratulations to Ray Lawless who in a final against John Reid became the 2017 Seniors Summer Matchplay Champion. Congratulations also to Brian Edwards who won the Seniors Prize for the Trotter Trophy Series accumulating 34 points throughout the season, while runner up to him with 32 points was Adrian Wright.

Sam Orr continues great form!

Trotter 16 was played last Thursday, and Sam Orr continued his purple patch with a winning score of 42. John Close had been playing some good golf this season, and he too had a 42 to finish second. Third with 41 was Andrew Wallis.

Club Championships Recap

Saturday was the Club Championships, a 36 hole medal off the blue plates with lots of trophies on offer, including a yellow tee stableford in the middle. Here is a round-up of the results.

Yellow Tee Stableford:

1st place – Martin Higby, 39 points
2nd place - Ben Kelly, 38 points
3rd place - Alan Jones, 38 points

Club Championships:

Morning round:
Lowest Gross score of 76 - Charlie Berry
Lowest Nett score of 71 - Keith Greenfield

Afternoon round:
Lowest Gross score of 74 - Jon Little
Lowest Nett score of 71 - Shaun Carter

The Williamson Cup is presented to the player over 50 with the lowest 36 hole Gross score and the winner with a gross score of 157 was Paul Jamieson.

The Club Championship Salver is awarded to the player with the lowest nett score and the winner with a nett score of 148 was Adam Moore.

The best gross scores of 148 were posted by Derek Eason and Carl Adams and after a sudden death play off the results were as follows: The Club Championship Rose Bowl (Runner Up) was Derek Eason and The Championship Cup (Club Champion of 2017) was Carl Adams. 

Spencers take home the Two Generations Cup

The Two Generations Trophy was contested on Sunday and, while the conditions were fairly miserable, it was still an enjoyable afternoon nonetheless. With a score of 92 nett 71.5, the winners were Sara Spencer and her son Joe. Runners up were Mark Bentley with son Myles, and third were Anne Maria and Tom Kitchen.

Ladies Competition

Rain affected play on Tuesday as only about half of the ladies braved it. Sue Totty put a stop to the Jamieson run as she won Division 1 with 38, but Lucy Jamieson did actually finish second with 36 and in third with 31 was Ruth Walker. Helen Billington topped Division 2 with 32, second on 31 was Sheila Scott, and third with 30 was Marilyn Jones. Ala Lloyd also scored 32 to win Division 3 while Hazel Ridge was second with 31, and in third, also with a 31, was Sheila Kenwright. Jayne Dixon made a return to the Winners’ Circle with a 33 in Division 4, second with a popular score of 31 was Anne Turner, and third with 26 was Pauline Norcott.

Captains' Competition

The Society of Liverpool Captains had their Annual Meeting at Celtic Manor last week. Heswall's Peter Rogers won the over 65s prize. The Tom Wolfenden Trophy for the player over 65 having the greatest number of Stableford points, aggregated for the three rounds played over the 2010, Roman Road and Montgomerie courses. Peter's score was 100; a great achievement as the majority of the 220 Captains at the event were in this category.

All the more remarkable is that Peter probably had the lowest handicap of any of the over 65s
