What a fantastic watch again
The first two days were hard and bouncy, there were some surprising missed cuts, one being defending champion Sergio after his opening round ‘Tin Cup’ moment on 15 and some unsurprising names leading the field.
Saturday was very interesting, after some light rain the course was scoreable and Tommy Fleetwood took advantage with a superb 66, then the late starters got a taste of what we’ve been playing in as the heavy stuff came down forcing Rory into the Azaleas. Short games prevailed as it so often does with chip-ins from Kuchar, Reed and McIlroy. So to Sunday which was billed to be the Hazeltine battle once again as Reed and Rory faced off. That didn’t happen as Rory was unusually poor, almost everyone was under par in the final round, none more so than Jordan Spieth who surged through the field with a 64, Rickie Fowler was the closest challenger to Reed but fell one short. The gritty American who will put his win down to his success at Heswall in 2006, I’m sure, showed great determination and composure to claim the green jacket with a total score of 15 under par.
