Welcome to this week’s news. This week we look back at controversy at the US Open, some excellent club scoring again and some new shop promotions. Enjoy the read.

What about Tommy!

The joint lowest Sunday major score with a flawless 63 to finish in second place. There were some big names who couldn’t cope with Shinnecock Hills though, Rahm & Mcilroy to name just two. Brooks Koepka, however, remained remarkably calm throughout to be the first person to defend the title since Curtis Strange in the 80s. 

Tough day in the Trotter...

Hurricane Hector swept the course on Thursday making for a tough day in the Trotter. The later starters got the better of the weather and it showed. Josh Parry was pretty much last to tee off and came in with the winning score, 40 points. Runner up was Mike Watson with 39, reducing his handicap again before our Lombard Trophy final next month at Sandiway was Zac Bromhead.

We can all do our part...

Guy and the team are working tirelessly to get the course into the brilliant shape it’s currently in. We have had nothing but praise from each and every visitor that has played this year. We as members though can do better than we do, this is the 7th tee on Friday following the Trotter; there were only members playing! Along with keeping on top of the pitch marks we all need to look after our tees, please endeavour to use the divot boxes provided. 

The putter warmed up!

The Captain and I were losing convincingly against Dave Cederholm & Mark Sanderson that afternoon, 3 down at one stage until the most important part of the game turned our fortunes. Our ball striking didn’t get much better but around the greens we did, with just 12 putts on the back 9 we completed the comeback with a 2 up victory.

A break from medals...

There was a break from medal play on Saturday as the gents played a Stableford for the Centenary Salver. Scoring was excellent, especially from 4 handicapper Mike MqQueen who scored a superb 42 points to lift the Salver; runner up was Joe Williamson with 41 and third with 39 was a Ethan Smith. In division two Paul O’Neill took top prize with 38, runner up with 37 was Mike Dooney and in third with 36 was Geoff Kimpton.

Well done to Ben Kelly who recorded a hole in one on the 14th hole!

Nigel dazzles...

The Charles Craig Salver was contested on Monday, and Seniors committee member Nigel Kenwright had a dazzling score of 42 points to win the trophy; runner up was Mike Grainger with 39 then in third with 38 was Richard McNeil

Last but not least...

The ladies also played for the Charles Craig Salver on Tuesday but their competition was medal.

The last card into the computer was the winner as Angela Starkie scored a fantastic 4 under par 70 to win the Salver and division one, runner up in the division was Jackie Walker with 73 beating Sue Totty on countback. Helen Billington won division two with 74, one back in second was Margaret Shepherd and in third with 76 was Marilyn Jones. In division three Anne Chadwick won by 5 points with a 73 from Eileen Kilgannon, third with 79 was Christine Fisher. Pauline Norcott was the division four winner with 78, runner up was Sue Lovell with 79 and third with 80 was Mary Holgate.

Well done ladies!

Flying the flag...

Captain Trevor Cornford and John Roberts won the 2002 captains Salver at Caldy on Monday with 44 points, flying the flag for Heswall once again.

Well done gents!

A friendly halve...

On Tuesday night the scratch team headed to Caldy where the match was halved. Jon Little and Joe Williamson lost 7&5 to a very in form Dom Barnes and his partner George Roberts (returning after 2 years out) and Dave Cederholm finished all square in a bizarre match that only had 2 halved holes: 10 won in birdie and 6 in par; and Josh Parry and Ethan Smith won their match 2&1.

Back by popular demand...

We have once again been given all of the demo kit that PING have to offer. Although this time we have the wedges and putters too. Please drop and and take some stuff out to try. I’ve just put the G400 driver into play and it really is a superb club.
