What a Sunday that was!

The best weekend of the year didn’t disappoint again with 6 players in contention going into the back 9.

A Bogey free weekend at The Open is extremely rare and incredibly impressive. In the final round, Francesco Molinari holed a number of key 5-6 foot putts to keep momentum, to stay bogey free.

What’s more, he did all this in the company of Tiger Woods, who when in contention was very difficult to compete against for many years.

Rory also made a charge, Rose almost made Albatross and Tommy was up there again. The Americans were also looking good. This Ryder cup is set to be the best for a while, but if anyone deserves a major at the moment it’s Molinari. His last 6 events have been astonishing and he’s the most consistent player on the planet.

Those who have been out for a playing lesson with me recently will have heard me talking about the advantage of firing away from pins, Francesco gave us a masterclass in this and no one deserved the Claret jug more than he!

The latest winners were...

99 people teed it up in the Trotter last Thursday, and one player stormed to victory. Paying tribute to his newly fitted Titleist AP3 irons, Chris Hornsby came in with a blistering 43 points, runner up with 40 was Bryan Baldwin and third with 39 was Jim Eddowes.

On Saturday we gave the gents a rest from medal and played a 4BBB Stableford, and scoring off the white tees was good. First place went to Jack Gray & Jon Little who had a 9 under par score of 45 including a 1 under par gross front 9 from Jack and a ‘2’ from each of them on the back 9. Runners up with 43 were Neil Williamson & Graham Crich, third on the same score were Paul Jamieson & Rob Bevan. 

There were once again complaints about slow play in both events. With an increase in full playing members the tee booking on competition days is very healthy.

There was a 9 or 18 Hole Stableford on offer to the ladies on Tuesday. The 9 Hole event was won with 21 points by Judith Whiteley, runner up with 20 was Ros White and third with 19 was Nicola Danford - Jones.

In the 18 hole event scoring was exceptional, both the winner and runner up in each division returning under par scores. Sue Banks had 39 to win division one, second with 38 was Kate Sparre - Dean and third with 37 was Christina Hornsby. Margaret Shepherd went one better to win division two with a 40 point haul, Katie Cleary was second with 37 and third with 35 was Marilyn Jones. A card play off was needed to separate the two 39’s in division three, Alka Tank just edging out Jean Breckenridge, third with 37 was Bernie Jones.
The same was needed to decide division four as both Sue Lovell (winner)and Joyce Richmond scored 40, third this time was Sue Jones with 35.

Captains' joy!

The 2006 Captains held their Annual Salver day at HGC on 13 July. Our 2018 Captain Trevor partnered 06 Captain John Smith and they romped home to win with 43 points. The first time Heswall has won in 12 years, great going gents!

Not a good taste...

The Lady Captain and I played our final challenge match last Wednesday, and we had our first taste of defeat, giving only 2 shots we came up against Dawn Hodge who I don’t think missed a shot and Wendy Smith who’s putting would have scared Molinari. Well done ladies for a well deserved 3&2 victory.

Grrrr!

A quick recovery, however!

I managed to overcome this loss however to progress through the preliminary stage of the Cheshire & North Wales PGA matchplay with a 2&1 win over Alex Rowland at Hawarden on Monday evening. I’m looking forward to meeting Jason in one of the later rounds so I can remove him of his crown from last year!
