The Ryder Cup
This week is obviously Ryder Cup week, the greatest sporting event on television. We will all be routing for the lads but especially for Jamie Donaldson who is a friend of ours and was coached for many years by Alan Thompson.
The pairings haven't yet been announced but I'd like to see Jamie partner his good friend Justin Rose, I think this pairing would bring home some valuable points, come on Europe!
Captain's Finals
Sunday played host to a number of different events. At 8am and 8.15am the Captain's Prize semi-finals took to the course, with John McNeill triumphing over Chris Oakes and Shay Keogh winning against Glynn Rankin.
Then the Captain's Medal teed off and winning with a nett 69 was Josh Dixon. In second place, with nett 73, was Dave Holgate who beat John Smith on countback.
The next match saw Christina Hornsby overcome her nerves to defeat Judith Brown in the Captain's Prize for ladies, adding to her Dora Bennett trophy earlier on in the month. A great season for Christina!
At 12.45pm Ray Parsons/Heather Ensor took on Hywel/Sue Jones in the Mixed Foursomes final. A close match was won in the end by Hywel and Sue.
Finally the Captain's Final was a scratch match between John and Shay, both off 5 handicap. The match was neck and neck for the front nine until John started to turn the screw after the turn, eventually running out a 4&2 winner.
Summer Fourball FinalThe Summer Fourball final was decided on Wednesday of last week. Yet again a very close match coming down to the last putt on the 18th hole where Rob Cookson and Chris Dhenin triumphed over Glynn Rankin and Paul Cottrell.
Well done to all the knockout winners. This is a real mark of consistency over the season.
Lady Captain's Prize MedalThe ladies' competition on Tuesday was the Lady Captain's Prize Medal with a subsidiary stableford event following on. In the main medal, Charlotte Bilton returned both the lowest gross and nett scores with a superb 84 (nett 72). Runner-up, with a nett 73, was Anne Chadwick and in third, also with 73, was Kate Dean.
In the stableford competition Sara Spencer continued where she left off with a comeback score of 39 points, followed in second by Sue Totty and Sheila Scott in third, both with 36 points.
Wave Competition
Saturday's competition was the Wave Comp, in waltz format. Some great play in this team game. The winners, with a very good score of 84, were Tony Hogan, Josh Dixon and Alex Zelaskowski. Runners-up, with 81 points, were Dave and Sean Holgate with Nigel Kenwright and in third were Neil Stephenson, Steve Skupski and Mark Dewhurst one shot further back.
Mini Trotter
The mini Trotter has started again and is a popular competition over the 12 holes. Last week's winners were Paul Hornsby with nett 42 (4 under gross!), Frank Lovell and Tom O'Neill, both with nett 47's.
Junior Competition
The 10-13 year old juniors had a nine-hole green tee competition on Sunday evening, making the most of what light we have left. Congratulations to Charlie Bennett who finished first, Katie Cleary who took second and James Lemon in third.
