Welcome to this week's newsletter bringing you all the latest news from around the club, competition results, but there is only really one place to start. Enjoy the read. |
What a tournament that was...
Francesco Molinari once again showed his class. To go a record 49 holes without a bogey around Augusta National is nothing short of super human. Like Spieth 2 years ago though the wind fooled him on 12 and his race was run.
The back 6 holes were as good to watch as any previous Major for me, but Tiger Woods - wow! Experience counts for so much and did he show it. 14 years since he last won a green jacket and he took this one all in his stride, inspiring another generation along the way.
As Butch Harmon said at the end: “Tiger is back, golf is back”.
Well done to the winners of our two sweeps, Ethan Smith & Martin Battishill. All accounts have been credited accordingly. I hope picking out a few players added to your enjoyment.

Joe's hot form...
That was a cold week on the Wirral last week, unless you were Joe Williamson who with 2 bogeys and a double went around the course in just 64 shots for a winning score of 44. Mike Mcqueen would have been feeling good about his own round of 69, but he was the runner up with 42 points, while third with 42 was Daniel Kitchen. Well done to Barbara Jamieson for winning the ladies event with 36 ahead of Kelly Marsh in second. |
Away day to Llanymynech
The gents enjoyed a cold but successful away day to Llanymynech on Saturday. In a best 2 scores from 4 format the winning team with 89 points were Simon Banks, Graham Crich, Neil Williamson & Mike Roberts while runners up with 88 points were Chris Thomas, Bryan Baldwin, Marcus White & Paul Cottrell and third place went to Alex Berriman, Martin Higby, Geoff Kimpton & Graham Thomas with 87 points. |
Ladies battle it out...
The ladies faced tough conditions once again on Tuesday as the first rain for a while came down. Division one in the 18 hole competition belonged to Kath Milligan with 37 points, runner up was Wendy Smith whose 36 points pipped that of Clare Palmer on count back. In Division two the scoring was excellent as Marg Shepherd took top spot with 41 points, Kelly Marsh was second with 40 points with Bette St John third on 34 points. Barbara Chesworth and Ala Lloyd both scored 36 points for first and second respectively in Division three, and with 34 points, Alka Tank was third. Onto Division four where Ann Fisher was the winner by 5 with a 37 points, runner up was Rosemary Greaney and third with 31 points was Pat Kearon. Sue Jones was the 9 hole winner with 17 points, Beryl Chase and Pauline Jones were second and third with 16 points. |
Off to a winning start...
The Captain and I followed the ladies out in our first challenge match of the year as the blue plates felt a long way back. Our opponents for this one were previous tankard winners Andy Wallis & Paul Jenkins who put up a good fight, but in the end Roy and I ran out 4&3 winners. |
Jay consistency awarded...
Congratulations to Jay Tank for winning this year's Tony Brooker Trophy for the best aggregate scores across the season's Winter Stablefords. Well done also to Sam Austin who defeated Steve Skupski in the final to win the Blair Salver 2018/19.

Great win away from home...
The Junior Team had a tough opening fixture away at RLGC on Sunday. While Tiger was starting his winning back 9 the juniors were busy picking up their first win of the year by 3.5 & 2.5. Special mention to Harry Burgess who, on his debut, won his first point for the club.
Well done troops - a great start.

Do you often find yourself stuck between clubs? One club will launch too far beyond your target whilst the other will leave you short. If so, you're either very unlucky or you need to come and see us for a gapping session. |
| Example of poor distance gapping
|
|
Distance gapping is the art of putting your set together whilst ensuring each gap between one club and the next is equal. Take your wedges as an example. Say you have a PW with around 46 degrees of loft and sand wedge at 56 degrees; this 10-degree gap could leave you with a distance gap of around 30 yards or more! What do you do if you need to play a shot right in the middle of those distances? The same can be said at the other end of your set, but usually this will involve two clubs going the same distance. If you have a 3-iron in the bag as well as a hybrid and a 5-wood, chances are you'll be hitting them similar distances - so it's time for one to go! If any of this is resonating with you, then let’s get you booked in before you head out for your next round.
