Tour news

Perseverance pays off...

After 229 starts and six runners up places, Spain’s Jorge Campillo finally got what he deserved as he got his hands on the Moroccan Dagger at Royal Golf Dar Es Salam. You may remember me mentioning him a few weeks back as he spent a few years practicing at Heswall as an amateur.

It was a pairs event once again at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans, a fourball Thursday and Saturday, and foursomes Friday and Sunday. John Rahm teed up with Ryan Parmer which proved to be a winning combination as they finished on 26 under par while three shots back in second were Sergio Garcia and Tommy Fleetwood.

Competition news

A storm brewing...

After such fantastic weather over Easter we were back to what felt like winter last week as there was thunder in the air for the mideeek stablefords on Thursday. But that did not stop Barry Martin, who told me that he left a few out there en route to 41 points in the men’s comp, while runner up was was Rick Austin with 38 and third was John Kitchen with 37.

We were due to play a Texas Scramble on Saturday but storm Hannah saw that off. The course remained open but a combination of wind and rain made it unplayable

Countback required...

The ladies played a sunny stableford on Tuesday.

There was a three way tie in division one on 32 points, with Judith Brown beating both Sara Spencer and Lucy Jamieson on countback.

The same was the case in division two as the winner Bernie Jones pipped Sue Pogson after a pair of 32’s. In third place with 31 points was Kelly Marsh.

Alka Tank took top spot in division three with 30 points, Sylvia Comer was second with 28 points and third with the same was Irene Scott.

32 was a popular winning score as Margaret Steels found out in division four. Runner up to her was Anne Fisher with 30 points and third with 29 points was Kath Grainger.

A Bank Holiday win for the Banks...

Well done to Simon and Sue Banks who won the opening mixed of the year on Bank Holiday Monday with a score of 40 points while runners up on the same score were Dave and Sue Pogson and third with 39 points were Alka and Jay Tank.

A real 'ding-dong' match...

The Captain and I played our second challenge match of the season yesterday against Mark Sanderson and Sandeep Grewal in what proved to be a real 'ding-dong' match which went all the way, but Roy and I eventually won 1up on the 18th green.

Let's take a trip round the course...

Now the summer tees are out I’m going to help with the most important part of your golf, course management. To help you with this, we will be doing a hole by hole weekly guide until we reach the 18th.

Don’t worry if your nemesis hole is week's away, we can awlays get out on the course for an on-course lesson and we can go out and tackle it together.

Prepare for success!

Remember, if you want to play your best golf, you’ll have been on the range for 20 minutes already so that you know the most likely shape of your impending shot.

Don’t panic if it’s not your usual ball flight that morning, just go with it.

How to play hole 1...

This is one of the toughest opening tee shots in the North West. There is no prize for going left but you can’t really lose your ball down the right either. So think about it!

If you’re off a handicap of 7+ (men) or 13+ (ladies) then you have a shot here. Use it. Do you really need that driver off the tee? 3 irons will find the green in most cases.

Your shot into the green, be it second, third or fourth will be uphill to a green that doesn’t want the ball to release. Use more club than you think as the trouble is short.

If you’re outside of 8’ you’re unlikely to hole that putt more than 47% of the time. And that’s if you’re a tour pro. So 2 putts are acceptable. If you’re inside that range don’t be disappointed if it misses but be disappointed if it doesn’t go past the hole!

From green to tee

Be honest, how much thought do you put into the golf ball that you play? Probably not as much you do your clubs but considering the ball is in play on every single shot, using any old thing that you find at the bottom of your bag could be leaving you paddling uphill.

Which Titleist ball to play?

The first question to ask is:

What do you want from your ball?

Obviously, getting the thing in the hole in as few shots as possible is the ultimate goal, but there are many paths to getting there.

There are balls that offer impressive distance, such as the Titleist Velocity, whilst others that provide incredible feel, such as DT TruSoft. But if you are looking for total performance without sacrificing on any one element, Titleist's Pro V1, Pro V1x and AVX balls are truly phenomenal.

Well played! You’re on the green in two, outside chance of a birdie, just knock it close and walk away with the perfect par. Only that isn’t always the case, is it? Three putts later and you’re walking to the next hole cursing, but it doesn’t have to be that way…
