Welcome to this week's newsletter.
The golf either side of the pond was increadible this week, one member's purple patch continued and who tamed a tough course set-up in Trotter 6?
Enjoy the read. |
What about that golf from Ireland!
Lahinch Golf Club was unbelievable, as were some of the scores. Robert Rock narrowly missed out on a 59 and John Rahm had a fantastic final round of 62 to take the title. Well done to local man Paul Waring who with his 7th place finish guaranteed himself a place in The Open at Royal Portrush in two week's time. |
Just the start...
I mentioned Matthew Wolff a few weeks ago as one to watch out for on the PGA Tour. Well, last week in Blaine, Minnesota he made his break through. Wolff's unique style is unrivalled, he has power to burn and a great short game to match, but holding off the likes of Bryson DeChambeau to take the win shows massive mental strength. His final round of 6 under for a 21 under total will be the first of many, I’m sure. |
Crouse management key in Trotter...
The course was fiery for Trotter 6 last week, meaning missing in the right places was essential, especially with some tricky pin placements. Keith Rafferty must have stayed on the right side of them as he carded a winning score of 41 while Iain Colligan followed him in with a 40, and third on the same score was Paul Alcock after countback. |
Consistency is the key...
The second leg of the Ball Cup was contested on Sunday. Blue tees and rain faced the morning starters, but brighter skies came through for those playing after lunch. There were a number of players in with a chance of the 36 hole prize.
Fred Williams had the first round lead with 64, and although his challenge was a bold one, a second round 81 for a total of 145 pushed him back to third place. Shaun Carter had impressive rounds of 69 & 74 for 143 to finish second, but it was the consistency of Richard Knowlson whose 71 & 70 for 141 took the title. |
Mark's purple patch continues...
Mark Graham is having some year on the course. He was on hand again to win the Yellow Tee Stableford on Saturday with 40 points, just pipping Mark Lockyer on countback, while third with 37 was Mark Prosser. |
Kelly and Sara take the trophies...
Well done to Kelly Marsh who won the Charles Craig with a nett 66 and to Sara Spencer who had the lowest gross and won the Doris Brown Scratch Cup. |
Let's take a look at hole 9... A hole that needs a lot of thought.
If the green is reachable in two then taking on the ditch could be worth the gamble, but get it as close to the middle of the fairway as possible as down either side of it makes the carry longer.
If this is a 3 or 4 shot hole for you then make sure you lay-up well short as this will take the pond on the right of the hole out of play for your next shot. When approaching the green the ball needs to be either coming in from really high or really low, anything mid-height will make getting it close to the hole tough.
Again if you’re relying on your short game for the par then keep your pitch close to the flood and use the contours to leave yourself the easiest putt possible.
