Tour news

Rory chases down Justin...

That’s it for another season on the PGA Tour as the FedEx Trophy was decided on Sunday at East Lake. Justin Thomas couldn’t make his head-start count, as Rory McIlroy secured victory in the Tour Championship with an 18 under par total and the FedEx Cup, crowning his biggest season to date.

On the European Tour big hitting South African, Eric Van Rooyen got the better of Matthew Fitzpatrick in a Sunday showdown at the Scandinavian Masters to propel himself into the top 10 of the Race to Dubai standings. This week the tour head to the most picturesque event of the year at Crans Sur Sienne in the Swiss Alps.

Competition news

It was the big one...

There were no Midweek Stabelfords last week with the course being used for the Junior Championships. However, on Saturday it was the Club Championship with a 36 hole medal off the blue plates for the 37 competitors with lots to play for.

The main event, 36 hole Scratch was won by Joe Williamson with rounds of 72 & 73, runner up with 72 & 78 was Matthew Bowes winning the Rose Bowl, and his scores also won him the nett Salver. The Williamson Cup for the best over 50s score was won by Paul Jamieson with 146.

In the Yellow Tee Stableford that was sandwiched by the main event, Andy Scarborough continued his handicap-plummeting season with a winning score of 40 points, while runner up was Russ Smith with 39 and in third with 37 was Craig Allen.

It was mixed golf again on the last bank holiday before Christmas! Julie & Mark Graham took the honours with 39 points in this greensomes format, just one point back were Frank Gill & Judith Brown, while Christina Hornsby & Andy Nolan came in third with 36.

The ladies played a Stableford on Tuesday and Lucy Jamieson’s 39 points was six clear at the top of Division One, runner up was Sue Banks with Kelly Marsh third on 29. Helen Billington had one of the best points scores of the year with her 41 in Division Two, second to her was Deborah Mintowt with 36 and third with the same score was Deb Bevan. Chris Bates won Division Three with 30 ahead of Barbara Chesworth on 28, third with 27 was Ala Lloyd. Julie Graham capped a great few days with a winning score of 33 in Division Four, Val Smith was runner up with 30 and third with 29 was Margaret Steels.

Club news

The best in the North...

The North of England U16 Championship returned to Heswall last week in the first of a three year cycle. The course was excellent, the weather was superb and the golf was tremendous.

England’s Libby Bell was the girls U16 champion, the boys title went to Cameron Adam from Royal Burgess following a blistering final day of 70,68, in the U14s category the winning girl was Isla Macdonald O’Brien and the top U14 boy was Josh Berry.

Well done to Martin Greaney and team for a hugely successful event.

Course news

Hole 15 - Play it as a 3 shotter...

Stroke index 2 and what feels like the longest hole on the course. Like the 5th, the vast majority will get a shot here, so play it that way - nett par is always a good score.

Keeping your tee shot up the left will shorten your second shot but will also bring the copse of trees into play. Your second shod needs to be laid up with two things in mind, your preferred yardage with a short iron and the position of the flag.

Missing this green in the wrong spot spells trouble and, once on the green, the slope is more severe than it looks - uphill putts will need to be travelling about 2 foot past in your minds-eye just to reach the front of the hole.

Moral of the story on 15 is to play it as a 3 shotter every time and watch yourself come off with a nett par or better most of the time!

Flop shot required

Type ‘flop shot’ into Google and Phil Mickelson’s name will be at the top of the search. The five-time Major champion is the go-to guy when it comes to shots around the green, especially the flop shot. So, if you want to follow suit and impress your golfing partners, here’s our guide to this magical shot.

Technique

The first thing you must do is accelerate through the ball and stay aggressive. It's when we get a little scared or take our eye off the ball that things start to go wrong, all of which we can explain during a short game lesson.

Wedge

Your wedge plays a vital role with worn grooves and incorrect bounce leaving you at risk of a bladed shot through the green. Nightmare!

Spotlight | Titleist TS hybrids

TS2 or TS3?

You will probably recognise these names from the new drivers that Titleist released last year. Well, they've carried on their pursuit of speed and have conjured up these two beauties as a result.

Both offer extreme yet controllable distances, along with more forgiveness when compared to previous Titleist hybrids.

The TS2 has a larger head and is arguably easier to hit, whilst the TS3 comes with the SureFit CG for ball flight control.
