Hole 15 on the men's card is a par four of 464 yards off the back tees, most believe this to be the hardest hole. Off the ladies tees there is a bit more freedom with it being a par five! For 90% of the membership this is definitely not a green you will be reaching in two shots so don't try to. Keeping it in play is the key here.
The two big oak trees often lure people in so use the contours effectively. A shot aimed at the rubbing stone on the left will generally end up coming to rest on the fairway. Your next target should be either the bunker short right as a lay-up short or for the slightly longer hitters, the green side trap on the left. If aiming for the bunker on the right make sure you leave it short. This shot should take the hazard out of play and leave you a simple approach to the green. By going for the left green-side trap as a longer hitter your ball should fall down into the mouth of the green. From here, a bad putt will end up closer than a bad chip!!!
Thu 16 Apr - Martin Higby decided on taking out the new Nike Vapor irons last Thursday and then retuned 28 points in the Midweek Stableford. "They were two clubs longer" was his comment. It's amazing how a set of clubs that suit you can help your game. He was one clear of Ben Kelly and Mike Morris in second and third, respectively.
Sat 18 Apr - On Saturday the men played their first Medal of the year, some opted in to the PGA Lombard Trophy qualifier whereby the winner has the unenviable task of playing with me in the Regional Finals at Formby in June. Congratulations to Dave Lawless who was the winner, his nett 71 in Division One saw off Paul Jamieson on a card play-off with Ryan Hanna in third with a 73 despite six birdies! In Division Two some hard work and a lot of patience paid off for Malcolm Gilmore who's winning nett 72 saw his handicap drop by 1.6 shots. Dave Holgate was the runner-up with nett 73, Nigel Kenwright finished in third with 75.
Tue 21 Apr - The ladies were basking in the sunshine again on Tuesday in the Golf Foundation Medal. In Division One the winner, who was benefiting from her recent 'A' team putting session, was Judith Brown with a superb nett 72, three ahead of runner-up Sue Banks. Kath Milligan finished in third with 76. In Division Two Pat Kearon topped the list with 76, with Sheila Scott in second on 79 and Christina Hornsby in third in 80. Ann Turner returned a 77 to win Division Three by one from Theresa O'Neill and Ann Scriven in second and third with 78s. Jackie Walker continued her good form to win Division Four with 77, there was a very welcome return to the podium for Sylvia Brown in second with 78, in third with 80 was Alka Tank.
Congratulations to Gary Lewis and John Body who were the winners of the Seniors' Pairs Knockout for 2014/15 beating Frank Gill and Steve Quail in the final.
Thanks to all who attended my Short Game Clinic on Wednesday. We had an eye-opening session and I'm sure the information gained will be translated into lower scores on the course. I will be running one of these a month and will send out the details of my May Clinic shortly.
