Is Tiger back then? Some phenomenal shots from him in last week's Wyndham Championship. He didn't quite get it done but watch this space! Congratulations to Cheshire's David Horsey as he picked up his fourth European Tour win in Denmark. Those eagle-eyed tour followers may have spotted some value in his odds at the beginning of the week.

Thank you to all of the helpers at last week's North of England Championships. What a week. It was deja vu as we had the squeegees out on the course on Friday trying to clear away the torrential downpour. The golf course drained fantastically well and I'm pleased to report that the second green remained puddle free! Well done to Lucy Jamieson who qualified into the final day's 36 holes.


 

This week's Raa Putting Demonstration on the putting green was a unique opportunity to gain an insight into the world of tour level putting characteristics and mechanics. We have the best practice facilities on the Wirral, however we are not all using them properly. Next time you go to the club have a look at what is going on. The lower handicappers are on the short game areas and the higher handicappers are on the range. 

From my own experience, there's only one way of getting your handicap down and it's not by perfecting your tee shots, or even your 150 yard shots. It's by becoming consistent from 100 yards and in! Go down and spend your time pitching to the three greens on the range. They are 70, 85 & 100 yards away. Then go and get confident in the bunker or around the chipping green.


 

Chipping game - Par 18 

Play this game and see how you do. Around the green play nine different shots but in each case take your putter and hole out. Nine holes gives you a par of 18, the Tour Pros play this all the time. See how many times it takes you before you can score 18 or better. I can guarantee by the end of it your chipping will be greatly improved, not to mention your confidence.

We were lucky with the weather on Saturday for the Club Championship and Yellow-Tee Stableford. The course was playing long after the rain but the greens were receptive. Well done to the Championship winner Charlie Berry with his scores of 68 and 74 to win by four shots from both Elliot Smith and Tom Dolan. The winner of the nett salver was Joseph Williamson with scores of 75 and 70 to beat Dave Cederholm on countback. The over 50s Williamson trophy went to Hywel Jones with scores of 82 and 66. 

I am delighted to announce the winner of the Yellow-Tee Stableford as Zach Smith. His 42 points was three clear of playing partner Phil High in second and Chris Moores in third. Zach will be leaving us in September to head back to the USA with his job. He has been a fantastic supporter of the club and winning one of his last competitions is a fitting way for him to say goodbye. We wish him well for the future. 

The club played host to the S&A ladies in an Exchange Day on Tuesday so there is no competition to report on. Our ladies are heading over for the reciprocal game at S&A today (Thursday).
