Greetings from Tom Atkinson
Heswall Golf Club - PGA Golf Professional

Hi golfers,

What a week of golf. From the controversy in the Solheim Cup to a first time winner on the European Tour to the ever-consistent Jason Day doing it again. That man is a machine and is now the number one ranked golfer in the world!

Competition results

How about closer to home? Well the Trotter Series has now been replaced with a Midweek Stableford competition. 41 points for Martin Higby saw him not only win the event, but also drop his handicap back to single figures for only the second time ever. Runner-up with 39 points, on countback, was Geoff Kimpton, Norman Waddell claiming third spot.

Saturday's Wave Competition was as enjoyable as ever. Is the Captain allowed to claim a prize? Well he will be next month as himself, John Kurton and Iain Colligan romped to victory with 84 points on Saturday. Runners-up with 79 points were Bryan Baldwin, Callum Dalton and Tony Walker. Third also with 79 were Adam Carter, Paul Jamieson and Alan Jones.

In the Captain's Medal you'd have needed a 71 to get on the podium. After a series of countback decisions, the winner was Micheal Robinson ahead ofAlex Zelaskowsi and Tom Kitchen.

Finals Day

And so to Finals Day on Sunday. It all began at 8am with Colin Jones refereeing as Mark Dewhurst defeated Dave Cederholm by 3&1. At 08.15am John Sharman was in charge as Paul Chadwick took Peter Cucchi to the 19th before he was eventually beaten. So to the finals, Peter and Alice Rogers took on Chris and Christina Hornsby in a well-contested Mixed Foursomes. The match went all the way to the 17th before Peter and Alice were able to shake hands as the winners. Trudi Harris was up against Kate Dean for the Silver Division matchplay title. Under the watchful eye of Sue Humphreys, Trudi triumphed in a well-supported spectacle.

Finally, the Captain's final teed off at 1.15pm with myself as the adjudicator. Peter Cucchi took a very early lead going 1up after one hole. It was up and down all the way to the 9th with few holes being halved. Peter stood on the 10th tee with still only that slender one shot lead. With some extremely consistent stuff off the tee especially, he started to turn the screw and was dormie 4 up on the 15th tee. A well struck but errant second shot from Mark was the final nail in the coffin as it found the lateral hazard left of the green. Peter saw his ball finish 20 feet under the hole for a 3 (nett 2), two putts from there was good enough for a 5&3 victory. Congratulations to all of the finalists for a very enjoyable day's golf.

Club news

The Wirral Classic is currently in full flow with 230 plus golfers enjoying the best the Wirral has to offer over a 5-day golfing bonanza. Our ladies competition day was moved to yesterday so their results will be in next week's news.

Members will be saddened to hear of the passing of Mike Bower this week. Mike was a very active and loyal member of the club and will be greatly missed.

Shop news

We will soon be in the midst of winter and it will be a necessity for your power trolley to have its winter wheels on. Please come and organise yours in plenty of time. We have both the actual wheels or the 'wrap around' tyres available in-store.

If you are in need of some new wet gear this year then look no further than the new Nike offerings. The Hyperadapt jacket encompasses everything you need in a waterproof, lightweight, breathable and stretch fabric that allows you to move around. With a lifetime warranty it comes at a price of £189.99 (jacket only), if you feel that this isn't what you're looking for then have a look at their StormFit series at just £119.99 for the suit.

How about a completely waterproof bag? There's nothing worse than wet grips when the game is hard enough as it is! There are some brilliant bags available these days, none more so than Titleist's StaDry (£179.99) or Motocaddy's Dry-Series (£159.99).

A must have for all serous winter golfers, a pair of FootJoy RainGrip Xtreme gloves for £24.99, the wetter they get the better they are!

I am changing the way I order club logo sweaters. Due to increasing cresting and small order charges, I'm going to make a list of orders and then order in batches. The sweaters come from Glenbrae and will cost £49.99. I have a colour chart in the shop so please come in and place your order.

I hope you enjoy the rest of the newsletter and have a great week.
